Making Better Bacon

So it’s been a while since I’ve posted and all I’ve got to talk about it bacon.  What is wrong with this picture.  Anyway,  we’ve had some sickees around our house this past week.  Keith has been really sick and Leah has a confirmed case of the flu.  Paige and I are praying we don’t get it.

Anyway, back to bacon.  Last year I made a decision to remove pork from my diet.  I love bacon so I started buying turkey bacon, but its just….lacking.  You know what I mean.  I recently saw this idea either on a TV cooking show or online somewhere and tried it and now the turkey bacon is palatable.   Here’s the recipe:

Package of turkey bacon

light brown sugar

cracked black pepper (I use a pepper grinder, but you could probably use regular pepper)

Lay your turkey bacon on a baking sheet and sprinkle the light brown sugar and then grind black pepper over the top.  Put in the oven and bake  until done.   I think I usually leave it in around 15 minutes.

You end up with much better flavor.  It really, really helps.

Enjoy,

Have never tried the turkey bacon, but maybe a teaspoon of sugar will help it go down, LOL!! Just teasing - bacon is my favorite! When my mom was in the nursing home and put on minced foods she was not allowed to have bacon, unless we signed a 'shared risk' agreement! She LOVED the taste of bacon and wanted it so badly that I signed. She was still clear of mind and could decide the risk - not that it was served often - but when it was she enjoyed her breakfast so much! Little joys1

I love pork bacon! But, I am ok with turkey-made products as healthier substitutions too! Thanks for this great tip!

That's a good tip. I don't eat pork either so I'll give this a try. Thanks, jj

We are a pork loving family. (After all, Sonny's is Lee's favorite restaurant!) My favorite is maple flavored bacon--I bet this has a flavor like that. Great idea. I should try it.

When my husband and I moved to Scotland, I learned an interesting bacon recipe that may be worth a try. Bacon wrapped bananas. It sounds weird but my husband loves them. All you do is wrap a peeled banana in bacon and broil it until the bacon crisps (about 15 minutes or so). I've never tried it with turkey bacon but it could be worth a shot!
