Boiled Peanuts

I was walking through the grocery store last week and there they were….

.Peanuts.

In the southeastern part of the United States, you can drive down back roads and  will probably spot a hand painted sign  pointing you in the right direction for Hot Boiled Peanuts.   My grandparents lived in south Georgia and grew peanuts in their garden.   My sister and I would spend a 2-3 weeks with them each summer. We would pick the peanuts straight from the garden and bring them in to be boiled.  mmm mmm life doesn’t get any better.

I don’t come across boiled peanut stands in Texas.  So I make my own.

I start out with a 20 oz. bag of raw peanuts in their hull.   Place the peanuts in a large pot and add water to cover.  Bring to a boil.  Add  a cup or so of salt.  I know, I know that sounds like a lot, but it has to penetrate that shell and get to the peanut inside.

You will boil and boil and boil some more to get the inside of the peanut soft.  Approximately 2-3 hours.    Keep adding water as needed.

After all that boiling you get these beauties.

Just break them open and enjoy.

Keep them in the shell until you are ready to eat them.  Place the uneaten peanuts in the refrigerator.  They are good cold or hot.

Let me know if you try them.

Hi Joy, There is a guy down the street from us who sells Boiled Peanuts. My friend Susan (who lives in GA) absolutely loves those things. I'm not too crazy about them (too salty) --but I do love peanuts most any other way......
Hugs,
Betsy

Seems like the topic of boiled peanuts came up on someone else's blog recently. When my inlaws first started talking about them I thought, "Now what on earth would a bowled peanut look like?" Oh, I've learned so much since then! Lee's mom makes them once in awhile, and sometimes we buy them at one of those stands called Mark's Melon Patch, just north of Albany. I must say, they've grown on me! :-) Great post!

I LOVE boiled peanuts!!! WE always stop at the roadside stands and buy them on our trips to Georgia and/or Florida!!

I have made them before, and they're great, but they taste SO much better from the stands.Maybe because that's a family tradition.

I´ve never even heard of BOILED peanuts before! My grandparents grew them too, but we always roast them in the oven.
This sounds so good though, I might just have to try it.

When you first mentioned boiled peanuts I thought "no way, that sounds gross" but actually they look pretty good in the picture! My husband would love them. I'll have to file this away in my memory to try sometime. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Take care and have a wonderful weekend!

Oh my gosh Joy! I love boiled peanuts. We grew up eating them. My dad was a Navy Seal and was first stationed in Virginia Beach, VA. I remember us getting them whenever we traveled to see our relatives. Going to have to try my hand at making them. You are right...I never see them in Texas.
Thanks for your sweet comments about my ARt Day. We had such a great time.
Hugs,
Tara
